Take a course maybe?

You could start by learning html. Its easy and is the basis for most websites. Then you could move onto javascript, pascal, and even assembler.

People who have Ph.Ds and spent decades in the computer industry dont dare to call themselves as experts. The reason is simple, no sooner they have mastered a technology, a new standard is invented and the learning cycle begins again.

You can get started into computers by joining short-term courses. For ex: NIIT in India conducts a 3 months course that gives ordinary people a good overview of using computers.

Typical courses to learn programming etc also last 1-3 months. That should be your next step.

I cant tell you how important it is to actually be glued to computers all the time to really master it. Hanging around a local guru and participating in IT forums such as this helps too.

Subscribe to a general IT magazine like CHIP/PC Magazine while you are at it.

By devoting a fixed amount of time to your field of interest everyday (programming/networking/it support). Read and try each and everything practially. Do not hesitate to break things, as it will add one more point to your experience, try to fix them. Google is your friend :)
