Yes, the "ad" stands for advertisement. There are two types of adware:
1) Programs that you get for free that have built in advertisements. These usually aren't that dangerous but annoying.
2) Spyware programs that sneak into your computer (usually by the user downloading and installing it unknowingly). These programs will pop up advertising banners/windows whenever you are connected to the Internet. Some even monitor what type of websites you go to and keep track of your interests. For example, if you go to hockey related sites, it will keep track of that and try to pop up advertisements related to hockey. Some adware will even hijack your Internet Explorer Start Page and try to direct you to an advertising site. Adware programs of this type can cause damage (usually unintentional and because they are poorly written) to your system, including corrupting files and disabling your internet connection. Also, if you get lots of adware or spyware in your computer, they are always trying to run in the background. With all of them running your Internet connection will end up becoming slower and slower (if it even works at all).
Two good programs to get rid of adware include:
1) Spybot 1.4
2) Ad-aware
To prevent adware all you need to do is learn what not to do on the Internet. For example, clicking on advertisements that say "Your computer could be infected. Click here to scan." or "You have just won one million dollars" or "your Internet connection isn't fast enough. Click here to fix it." or "punch the monkey". All of these and more will end up putting adware and/or spyware into your computer. DO NOT CLICK THEM. Visiting some sites will have more of these pop up windows. For example, pornographic sites, gambling sites, illegal music download sites, have lots of adware/spyware. Stay away from these sites.
Also, sometimes mistyping a correct site could lead you to an advertising site. For example, I just tried http://goggle.com instead of http://google.com and it brought me to a website that popped up 5 advertising windows tempting me to click OK. Also, some of the pop up windows had a "fake X" in the top right corner. (You know the Close X at the top-right of any window). Usually you can tell they are fake by placing your mouse over top of it (but not clicking). If the mouse cursor looks like a mouse pointer then it is usually a real X. If the mouse cursor looks like a hand, then it is a link, and you should NOT click on it. If you are unsure about a window, you can usually right-click on its task in the taskbar (Start bar at the bottom of Windows) and choose "Close" from the menu.
Hope this helps. I know it was more information than you requested. But it is good to know all this.
