I have 2 512mb modules installed, thats 1gb ram. I want to upgrade to 2gb of ram.

Should I get 2 1Gb rams and replace my current rams or just add another two 512mb modules?

that depends on your motherboard if you have 4 ram slots you can add 2 more 512 RAMs if you only have 2 slots you must sell the old ones and buy a 2 1GB RAM

If you have the means then buy 2 1GB RAM otherwise add 2 512MB RAM. Performance is almost the same. The only drawback in having 4 512MB RAM is theres no room for further upgrade unless you change all the modules to 1GB.

If you are a gamer 2GB RAM is more than enough. Better upgrade your video card instead.

BTW, did you check to see the llimit of how much RAM your system can accept? That is the real deciding factor in this matter regardless of how many slots that is on the motherboard.

If your system can handle only 2 GB, then I'd go for the 2-512MB.
If your system can handle 4 GB I'd get 2-1GB to make the total RAM 3GB. Then I'd replace the other two slots with 2 modules later on..

If your motherboard supports the Dual Channel feature, and you purchase 2, 1 gig modules of ram, performance will definitely increase.

First you have to see if

1) your PC's motherboard supports 2GB rm if so then you need to check
2) if the motherboard have sufficient sockets for you to plug in the two 512 mb rams if not it is advisable to buy two 1GB ram each and replace the two 512 rams.

GOOD LUCK!

So you got 4 slots. Use what you have and add what you need. Make sure your PC handles 1 GB per slot. By the way 4 GB sounds good too.

If the memory stick you add is larger than exisiting ram, then you need to move existing ram back one slot before adding larger stick.

Good to go.

Sure but :
First: how many slots you have
Second: Ask if your motherboard support them
Third: All your RAMs should be as one mark

Enjoy
