MS Word 2003 behaves perfectly normally UNTIL you have to go back and make a correction. Having deleted a single letter, typing in the correct letter to replace it DELETES the next letter in that word and the whole sentence if I carry on typing. Similarly if I want to put a space between two words using the space bar, instead of inserting a space it acts a forward delete key. HELP PLEASE.

Down at the bottom of your MS Word screen you will see the Page Status bar, it starts from the left with the following;
Page 1 - Sec 1 - 1/1
Towards the middle of this bar you will see four sets of letters, usually greyed out: REC, TRK, EXT and OVR.

If OVR is black and not greyed out like the other letters, it means you are in Overtype mode, which deletes up the words to the right, as you type.

This is switched on or off by clicking on the Insert key on the keyboard or by using the mouse pointer and double clicking on OVR. Make sure it is greyed out before you start typing and this won't happen you again.

Check your options. It sounds as though Word is set up so that backspace turns on the insert function on the keyboard. Go into 'Tools' and then 'options' and click on the 'edit' tab and check to ensure that overtype mode isn't checked.

If this doesn't sort it out, you are just going to have to be wary from now on and ensure that the overtype mode isn't active after you use the backspace function. You will know if it is on because 'overtype' will show at the bottom of the Word browser window.

Yes, you have activated your insert button by mistake! The insert button is on the upper right hand side of your keyboard above the numerics (usually). If that doesn't work then try reinstalling Word. Good luck!

I experienced this twice but still don't know the solution. It happened when the setting was changed or you're saving something that you copied from the Internet or word files with this matter.
The only solution I found out is to un-install my MS office and re-install it back afterward.

You should try pressing "Insert" once and see if that fixes it. If not try www.andytechnologies.com
