because in the 1940s it was considered healthier than natural methods, but in the 60s they sort of went back to natural, now its a toss up in most places. dont get all bent out of shape.

I dont think anyone thinks that. We have breasts for only 1 reason. However even though we are equiped with them does not mean that everyone can breastfeed. I really wanted to with my first and I never had enough supply to meet the demand and became incredibly stressed out and I dried up in about 10 weeks and obvoiusly swiched to formula. I just had my second baby a week ago and can already sense this same thing happening again. My son does not want to latch on so I am pumping and feel that every time I pump I am already making less and less and I have not even begun to pruduce actual milk yet only colostrum and have yet to be engorged? So even though you are not looking for debate, we all know that breast is best but that does not mean formula is bad.

When estimating the cost of a baby you want to make an over estimation of the cost... Formula is extremely expensive and if left out it can make an eestimation when only accounting for breastmilk be extremely low should formula be the choice or necessity...
When estimating the cost of raising a child from birth to independence (i.e. finished with schooling and living alone) don't you assume the high cost of college in the estimation? If that were to be left out wouldn't it skew the number quite badly even though not all children decide to attend college the cost is still factored in to give a better high rough estimate...
It's the same with formula not every child will be formula fed just like not every child will go to college but when making the estimate adding that additional cost as a cushion is a very sensible thing to do...

Not all women can nurse with success. I wanted to more than anything and never had enough milk for my son. I tried pumping more to increase the flow and after 2 weeks produced less than when I had started. After 3 months of stressing about my baby not getting enough, I gave up and switched to formula. I think that they throw that in there for those who can't nurse and want some figures of how much it would cost with formula! Formula is way expensive!

A couple things....there are mothers who are adverse to breastfeeding and mothers who have tried and it didn't work for some reason. And of course mothers who are going back to work and don't plan to breastfeed since they can't.
I don't want to bore you but I was dead set on breastfeeding our son but he wasn't latching on and I had no option but to bottle feed him and I was devastated since I felt natural was better. I slowly got over it and I now understand that formula is not as bad as some people think. I will try breastfeeding again with my next child but at least I know that either way can produce a healthy child and I won't worry.

Some women can't grasp the fact of having a child suck on the breast or find it not suitable for them and some can't produce enough milk to feed. It just all depends on how they feel about it. For me it was weird to have a child breast feed and at times it was uncomfortable to see and feel, but I did for as long as I could, I am one that doesn't produce enough milk to supply.

Maybe they always put formula into a cost equation to give you the max amount. I would ASSUME that everyone knows it's cheaper to breast feed.

Formula seems to stick with the baby longer requiring less feedings and more sleeping through the night.
Easier for dad to help out with formula.

Perhaps it's only the people you know who assume this. Those I know always tend to ask the mother which method she chooses to feed her child.
