You have two kind of verbs, action and linking. In any complete sentence, you will have a subject (noun) and the subject doing something(verb).
To break down a sentence into its smallest elements, you can find which two words you think are the subject and verb and take out all the other words in the sentence and the sentence will still make sense. Usually the subject and verb are together, but not always.
Usually in a command sentence such as "Stop" The subject isn't even stated, you just have to know that the subject is you and "you" are suppose to "stop"

The verb expresses an action, a feeling, a process or a state. Examples are taken from the Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels;
The wife minced a bit of meat. In this sentence 'minced 'shows an action.
It thundered all the time. Here 'thundered' shows a happening.
I chiefly wanted to know. Here 'wanted' shows a feeling.
He considered a while. Here 'considered 'shows a process.
I was the third of five sons. Here 'was' shows a state.

Verbs are action words. If you can do it, perform it, then it's a verb. The cat ran down the street, jumped over a fence, and climbed a tree.
Ran, jumped, and climbed are verbs, you can physically do those things, they are action words.
