There is a curious piece of old folklore about them. It is still current folklore that the eagle can fly higher, and see better, than any other bird (i.e. lots of people assume it's true, but it probably isn't). A century or two ago, people believed equally strongly that the eagle was the only bird - indeed the only living creature - which could stare straight into the sun without being dazzled blind.

This is why the eagle is the symbol of the gospel writer St. John the Evangelist.
