I like the internal. High quality video files benefit from the fastest data rate possible. I've tried a few TV / capture devices and have never achieved results with an external one to match an internal one.

I'm using a Hauppauge PVR-150 now and it's excellent. Most trouble-free tuner / capture device I've ever had. Records straight to MPEG 2 using hardware encoding. Nice for making DVDs without conversion. A small load on your computer hardware. You can actually use your computer without worry of messing up a recording. Only downside is the included software. A nice video program capable of editing MPEG 2 and saving to a variety of formats comes in handy. I use Ulead VideoStudio alot... SageTV adds Tivo-like functionality that really works quite well. StaxRip is a nice free converter that's great for converting the MPEG 2 files to XviD.

If you're looking for a HDTV card... I can't be of much help... Haven't gotten into HDTV yet...

Remember any internal device enjoys two things

1. Incredible bus speed as they stay on the motherboard
2. Clean power as it comes directly from a common source.

No matter if its an internal tuner or internal DVD drive etc etc etc.
