Those two phrases are so similar in what they are fundamentally saying: no longer doing something.
However, there are slight variations in the context in which these are used. Giving in... this usually means that you stop doing an action or that you go against your wishes or what you know you should do to do/say/believe another thing. Giving in is usually a ONE TIME event and only lasts temporarily. Sometimes Giving In means that you come to a compromise with a good friend, give candy to a crying child, or break your diet by eating chocoloate once. This doesn't define your viewpoint or life's actions but is a one-time decision.
Giving Up means that you absolutely quit something... you have surrendered to that fate, you believe it is hopeless, and this is usually a permanent thing. You give up smoking ... as a strong decision that is going to define your life actions. Sometimes people give up after careful thought and strong will-power. Sometimes people give up out of fear and hopelessness. Giving up usually means that all resources have been exhausted and the person sees that there is no other option but to stop trying or doing that action.

i think giving IN usually connotes something going on between two people. you want to go to mcdonalds but your friend wants burger king. eventually you give in to her request and you guys go to burger king.
giving UP is usually more of a one-sided thing. you're trying to lose weight but after months of exercise and diet you see no change. so you give up.
however, giving up can also invovle another person. you're trying to get your friend to quit smoking but she refuses. eventually you stop trying. that's giving UP, because it was still your own endeavor.
hope that explains it, sorry if it wasn't too clear!
