I'm designing my house and want to place my garage right at the rear of the plot. I want to know how much space I should leave as driveway between the house and the compound wall. My car is medium sized .

I think you need to consider the fact that your house will certainly outlast your car - rather than basing the width of the drive on the width of your current car, think about future possibilities as well. Are there other, perhaps wider types of vehicles you might want to purchase in the future? And what if you want to sell the house at some point - the drive would need to be wide enough to accomodate whatever a potential buyer might be driving.

Here is a site that gives the rule of thumb for driveway widths and lengths - in general, they say that a single-car driveway should be a minimum of 10' wide, and 14' wide if it's surrounded by walls:

You should also check to see if your area has zoning regulations related to driveway size - some do.

Minimum size I'd choose is the width of the garage door. Typically they are 9 feet wide.

Most cars are under 6ft wide so you need about 8ft for safety.
