It's difficult to pin down the reason behind the prohibition against white after Labor Day.The stories conflict. It may be temperature related or a class issue. The rule tended to be enforced more strictly in the South. The web site link I provide goes into this issue in a bit more detail.

The new rule is that you can wear white any time of the year. Usually people will pick an "off-white" color that is more of a cream or what's called winter white.

It was a society rule that said summer was over and it was time to wear darker, more muted colors.

I'm just guessing. Maybe because white reflects the heat and dark colors absorb the heat. So in colder weather you want the heat to be absorbed.
