From my experience (I work in the medical field) they seem to favour people with health related qualifications and/or hands on experience depending on what you intend to rep. Hope this helps and good luck.

They will focus on these qualities:
Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Able to effective speak and convince doctors of the merits of a particular drug.
Able to explain the side effects and the strengths of the product, which will need a good training in medical terminology and the sciences.
Incredible patience to wait at a doctor's office and not get ruffled when the receptionist blows you off.
Very pleasant personality.
Remember that you will not be selling the drugs to the doctor, because the sales are through the pharmacy, but you are trying to convince the doctors that your product is the one they should prescribe, so you need to convince them of the merits of the drug.
Also, you will want to make sure you behave ethically at all times. Including being careful not to promise things you cannot deliver upon. Integrity will be very important.
HINT: If you want to get in good with the doctor's team, bring in baked goodies to the office staff!
Finally, start going through different pharmaceutical company websites and look at the corporate strategies, mission statements, and objectives, including the upcoming drugs in the company pipeline. The new drugs are the ones they want you to detail (sell). The more you know about your target company and their primary competitors in various drug categories, the better your chances to land a job.

go to different drug company websites like Pfizer or Merck and submit your resume. You can also do a search on monster.com.
Network with other pharmaceutical sales professionals. If you go to a doctor that has an office with other doctors in the same building you may catch a few in the morning visting doctors and dropping off samples. I actually met a rep and I was able to give her my resume, I was in route to a job fair.
Check out http://cafepharma.com/ which is a website that can give you more insite into the profession as well as networking.
As most have stated, dress and present yourself professionally at all times. Most pharmaceutical companies look for strong outside sales experience and a clean driving record. If you do not have any sales experience, try to land a temp job in sales to build up your resume. Anything with cold-calling is helpful but as with any job, networking is what is going to help you in the long run. Ask your physician if he could refer you to his pharmaceutical sales rep so that he/she could be a mentor.
Good Luck!
