To start off, I'm planning to go to Schaumburg in November. I'm going to be arriving by bus, but the closest bus stations were in Elgin and Chicago. Elgin in 10-20 miles away, while Chicago is something along the lines of 38-48 miles away, as well as arriving in Elgin is cheaper. However...

Questions:

1.) Does anyone know if there are any AVAILABLE taxi services in Elgin? I searched the yellowpages and could only find services in Chicago.

2.) Does anyone know the taxi fare rates in Chicago if i were to travel 38-48 miles from there to Schaumburg?

I'd of course, prefer to go from Elgin to Schaumburg, instead of Chicago, but if that option isn't there, then suppose I don't have much of a choice?

Thank you in advance for any information received. I appreciate it greatly.

How about another bus ride?

PACE offers the 554 bus from Elgin to Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.

It took some time to find and figure out the route but there is no transfer.

Kudo's on the nicely formed question. It's nice to not have to be a mind reader. haha

(1) Call 303 taxi (847 303 0303) if you want a taxi in the burbs.

(2) Some burbs have a set fee from the city (but I think it's from the airport. You should call to double check)

Waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper to take the train from union station (buses stop there) out to elgin (you will want the milwaukee district west line to check times). It's about $4 one way versus time to city limits + time 1/2 once you leave the city limits in a taxi unless there is a set fare for the elgin area. In the burbs taxi's run time (time 1/2 is just to compensate chicago drivers for the ride back because they can't pick up a fare outside of the city).

Elgin to schaumburg probably is a $1 on the mdw line. But you will still need a taxi from the station.

So go with what ever is cheapest. Elgin is closer on the bus, but might cost more including a taxi. So depending on where you want to go in schaumburg you can either take the MDW line that goes out to elgin (has stops in medinah, roselle & schaumburg > all follow parallel to schaumburg > if going to woodfield area get off at medinah (about $15 taxi to mall & hotels). Or if you will be further north take the union pacific northwest line ($4) to the palatine stop & the fare should be the same (schaumburg is exactly in between both metra lines.)

lot of info, but it's pretty easy. & the train station isn't too wacky. The only weird part is that the upnw runs out of the ogilvie center about a blk or 2 north of union station. About 5 min hauling luggage. Just walk inside & go up the escalator & the trains are right there.

If you are calling a taxi to pick you up from the train station in the burbs, make a reservation. Taxi's don't hang about too much in the burbs. They tend to lurk at the airport, so they need time to travel.

Folks in Chicago are pretty nice, just ask & they'll direct you. Just don't believe any sob stories... just say NO firmly & they will pester someone else.

So look on metrarail.com to see which line is closest to your destination in schaumburg. & then you just have to decide if you want to take the train/taxi from union station or elgin.

Sorry for all the info, but without knowing everything ... there were too many variables.

Here are cab companies in Elgin:
http://local.yahoo.com/results?fr=dd-local-more&stx=taxi&csz=Elgin%2C+IL

Call them to get an estimated price for the trip.

2) I would NEVER ride a cab from Chicago to another city. 38 to 48 miles??? I would probably be cheaper to fly

Where are you coming from? You could get to Chicago and then take a Metra (http://www.metrarail.com/) train to Schaumburg. Here is a train that leaves from downtown Chicago and stops in Schaumburg (http://metrarail.com/Sched/md_w/md_w.shtml#STATION)

heavily, only evaluate making use of the CTA, they provide regular bus & rail lines serving all areas f Chicago. For journeys traveling extra outdoors of the city only take a Metra commuter prepare. Any selection may be extra not costly than that of a taxi.
