A reciprocal is a value formed from the original value but switching the places of the numerator and denominator.

For example,

The reciprocal of 8/9 will be 9/8.
The reciprocal of 15/11 will be 11/15
The reciprocal of 5 will be 1/5

NOTE: In the formation of reciprocals, the sign accompanying it NEVER changes. For example,

The reciprocal of -5/9 will be -9/5

Hope this helps.

Usually with a fraction they are talking about the multiplier that makes the fraction 1 (the answer is 9/8.) It is also true that -8/9 is the reciprical of 8/9, 8/9-8/9=0.

it's 9/8

the reciprocal is just when you switch the bottom and top of a fraction.

what about whole numbers, like 2 for example...you assume it's the same as 2/1, and flip it. so the reciprocal of 2 is 1/2.
