A lot of people don't vote simply because none of the choices seem very good. If we had always had the selection of "None of the Above," we could show our disapproval for those running. This would not mean that someone would not be elected, as the runner up would serve, but they would serve knowing they were not the first choice.

Should we demand of our representatives, at all levels of government, that we should have the right to choose, not to choose, any of the runners?

I don't think there should be a new election, with new candidate, when "None of the Above" wins, but perhaps they serve only half the time, without the option of running for re-election. Another option is that their income if slashed and they may not accept any requests to be a paid speaker, or any of the other ways they make a little on the side.

good idea and I would like to add that if none won, then nobody would be able to sit in that seat in congress until they won. That might be one way to get rid of these corrupt career politicians in congress.

Ha ha! Absolutely!
Unfortunately, the democratic method that we use is not entirely democratic. Ideally, the "best" candidates are chosen to run against one another, but the quality of the candidates depends on who's doing the choosing. I think that we have write-in ballots for the exact reason that you mentioned. We have a two-party system because that has been deemed the most appropriate, but I agree with you that we shouldn't have to choose between the lesser of two evils. Perhaps there should be a "vote of no confidence" option.

You are exactaly right, there isn't anyone on these ballots who are doing anything for the people,so I am sure if people could go in to the polling place and vote for None of the Above,we would see more people than we have seen since the earlier days who knows even the 18 year old adult who are elegable to vote would come and say none of them are qualifed,I agree with you 100 percent. There isn't really a write in either these days.Sister Jean

Good question!

I like the idea, now if None of the Above "won" what would happen? A automatic new election with new candiates?

That would be interesting to consider, but I think that None of the Above should have a special outcome instead of just a protest vote

Your choice for "None of the Above" is to skip that particular office. It is tallied as an "undervote" and the various campaigns, pundits and politicos analyze that "dropoff" in votes cast.

I know that it doesn't address the "heart" of your question - you are more concerned with sending a more visible message. Try finding a strong candidate that you can believe in with all your heart - if they are not out there, encourage someone to run or run yourself. Get truly involved in the process to effect change in the system.

a random selection from the phone book is the only answer for "election" to office, just like jury duty, better yet a panel of three people selected at random...best two outa three prevails!
none of the above would be nice in the mean time.

Yes indeed..... people are disgusted with having to vote for the lessers of evils....

I think that if "none of the above" received the most votes, then that position would have to have a new election with new candidates.... We already had Clinton elected without being close to receiving a clear majority... thanks to the little bastard parrot and his damn squawking...

You do have the right to vote none of the above. You only have to vote on the issues/candidates that you want. You can leave the others blank.

Thats an interesting question, but fortunately we haven't run into a situation lately where "none of the above" has been warranted.

By not voting you are already indicating your "none of the above" preference. Also, you can already to the same thing simply by taking your ballot into the booth and not selecting any one for a particular position.

Why go to the extra expense (tax $$$) to add none of the above to every position on every ballot of every election?
