an elodea leaf is an aquatic plant right? Probably means that it can absorb water through the leaves as well as the roots.

Dropping 5% (hypertonic) salt water would draw water out of the plant and (osmos) into the salt solution. The plant would shrivel up and die.

It doesn't matter if the plant even lives in salt water, 5% salinity is still greater.

The Elodea leaf will be plasmolysed.
Look up "Plasmolysis".
Look up " hypertonic"
You will see the cell membrane separating from the cell wall; the cellular contents will appear to be compacted into a smaller area.
