I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory…

Is it a coincidence – that the media almost exclusively promotes music that always has the same, distinctively annoying signature sound? I’m referring to unimaginative, or mushy top 40 acts; common, clichéd ballad compilations and the cheesiest of techno compilations. I mean, there are loads of well-known, respected artistes out there to pick from, you know?

Or are they promoting them because – they can’t sell? LOL.

But I still can’t shake the feeling that we are being brain-washed – so that people would, like, be conditioned to think and feel a certain way; or more people would listen to ballads, which leads to you know what, which leads to keeping the economy alive, etc., etc.

Does anybody have any good insights? B.t.w., I live in Asia. I think I see some h8te coming so I’ll brace myself. LOL.

Most people here in the USA, at least, don't bother to search out anything different. Pack animals, you know. Too lazy to turn the dial the 5000th time they hear a song. We just slobber up what they feed us. Good consumers over here. Oh, maybe that's unfair. Maybe it is just half the people that do that. I find my music by browsing at Borders, listening to some of the music shows on NPR, or previewing on Limewire. I'm open to other suggestions also. Oh, and no, it is not a coincidence that they do that. It is marketing. They find a formula that works, and they stick with it ad nauseum. Peace, Asian person.

The Powers That Be are fourteen-year-old girls. Every generation, the same three-chord tricks will appeal to their immature sense of musical art, and the same unrealistic, juvenile view of love will set their little hearts a-twitter. Sure there's great music out there, and some are even very popular with adults, but unfortunately, the prime music market can't dance around their bedrooms and giggle over how hawt Death Cab for Cutie is-- thus, no airplay.

Top 40 is mainstream, and that is what sells. People request that stuff. It is mushy and common, but you don't have to listen to it. That is why there are so many channels, at least in the wonderful USA. People like the comfy, cozy ballads because they don't focus on the violence and uptight outlooks of many genres. Fact remains, however, that you don't have to listen to it.

I don't think there is an ulterior motive at all. It's about money and how much records companies can make.
