Won't argue the good and bad, but it is estimated that the casualty rates would have been over 10 million if the Allies invaded Japan. Japanese causalities.
During WWII they had also used a technique called fire bombing that used fuel air incendiaries to create firestorms above a city. See Dresden Germany.

Letthefun- You need to review history before you make your little speech's. First the Japanese civilian population would have fought us . Look at Okinawa. The civilians fought us and the ones that mostly didn't committed suicide. As their government told them we would rape and kill them and their children. You apparently know nothing about history or Japanese tradition during WWII. Christ the schools were training kids with Bamboo spears to charge allied troops at the Beaches. All the Japanese population knew was what their Military told them and that was that we'd do everything imaginable including eating their kids. GET A REAL LIFE and join the real world.

Answer Man- See Okinawa Battle for. You Idiot we took 30 thousand causualties in three months and the Japanese military over 100 thousand. They did not and would not surrender. Period. That was just before the A Bombs were used and that was why the decision to use them came about. Over 100 thousand civilians were killed on Okinawa by activily fighting, bombs, and mostly suicide. They did not make any attempt to surrender.

destroying a city of wholly civilian population,
Only a sick mind can call it good.

Going by those who say it is good and saves other lives, Right now America should be bombed considering that it is the only country right now waging war and taking more more lives in Afghanistaan, & Iraq directly and on so many other countries indirectly by proxy and preparing for war on another three.

If this is how the Americans think, then we should make sure that every country has a proper nuclear deterrant against the US of A

and If wars can be shortened and justified by bombing civilians like most say, then in every war the US has fought Bombing the civilians in the US by anybody is justified, Only that the Bombs have to be much bigger and better,

Just like Mr Moo says.If you figure killing millions of innocent people a good thing, your as bad as Hitler. Yes Japan was the aggressor in the war, but that doesn't mean all japs supported the war. It was the goverment's decision to bomb pearl harbor, so why do the innocent civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki pay for the sins of their government with their lives?

It was not only bad, it was despicable.

Japan tried to surrender since nearly six months. We knew that we had the upper hand and could roll them anytime we wanted to. The atom bomb wasn't ready just yet and we wanted to show Russia that we have it and that we are not afraid to use it. Once the device was ready we picked two cities and bombed them. We wanted to know the effect of the largely untested devices and make a point to the Russians.
A few hundred thousand civilians had to give their lives for a PR stunt. Days after the events the war was finally over and America had made it's point.

First let me say, war is bad, inheritly bad, that's obvious.

Bombing civilians in war is bad, but it happened a lot by all sides in WW2

Now the use of nuclear weapons we know is extremely bad, but the full extent of nukes (radiation fall out, nuclear winter, etc) wasn't fully understood until after the war.

Now, the reason they dropped the bombs was because of the potenial for extreme causuties during the planned land invasion of Japan. The general population were getting readying to fight the invasion with sucide attacks. If the Allies invaded it would have been thousands of times worst.

So was it good or bad? I have no idea. Except that war is bad in general, but with todays thermonuclear weapons it's unimaginable.

Depends if you were on the receiving end of the bombs or not. It was a way to shorten the war by months or even years and saved countless allied lives. I feel were justified in one way because we never asked for the war. But then there is the issue of so many innocent people dying and suffering. It is not as simple as saying was it good or bad.

Any kind of war is bad. What is any country supposed to do when fanatics like Germany, Italy and Japan try to take over the world. You have to decide who the bad guy is and do what ever is necessary to protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness of all people, whether they be red, yellow, black or white. It's simple. Who's flying planes into buildings? Who's blowing themselves up in markets? Who's test firing nukes? Who's running over it's own people with tanks? Who's drinking wine and eating well, while his own people starve? Who's stirring up hatred all over the world and trying to start a holy war? Well...The USA is not perfect, but we're not the one. It's terrorist, It's fanatic's, It's dictators.

Good and bad. Japan brought it on themselves. Follow a maniacal tyrant and there are bound to be problems. It did save millions of lives. Japan wasn't about to give up and we were going to have to kill a lot more to get them to give up. Too bad though. Friggin war sux.

The entire country of Japan was involved in fighting the war. Only the young were, for the most part, innocent.

Hey, letthefun,
Up yours pal. Use your freedom of speech against the country that provides you with that right. Creep.

at that time it was great because it stopped Japan from obliterating half of the US but now its not so great since this technology was picked up by terrorist countries and are now threatening to use it against the US.
