The purpose to be here is only for an unknown reason if you believe it to be so. I believe that the purpose of living on Earth is to realise the gift of life by experiencing and enjoying it. It is great if you could find an occupation whereby you feel that you are helping the world community and thus compels you to believe that this is your purpose but it is not essential. The greater purpose is to not have a purpose. Worrying about the purpose of life just inhibits you to experience life itself. If I could respect myself, respect other people, respect nature and be happy everyday, I would not even care whether I have a definable purpose in life or not.

A favourite quote of mine 'it's not the destination, but the journey. You may have planned to go to Italy and wind up someplace completely different that is just as good or better.' If they're is a reason why do you want to know? This is a good place to start answering a question like that. You'll have to find your own answer because it will be different from everybody else's. I'm here to serve my goddess, but you may be here to serve your god, or make beautiful music, or build a building. Only you can decide that. Here's a question for you if thread was intelligent would it know it was part of a shirt?

Well, in an evolutionary sense (and the most basic sense at that), is to pass on our DNA. That's the basic purpose really for any living thing on this planet. But I like to see it as more philosophical and spiritual than that. I like to think that each of us is given this wondrous opportunity at this thing called life, and with that life, we can do whatever it is that our heart so desires. And if we do make a good life for ourselves while were here, perhaps we can leave our fingerprints on this Earth when we are not here anymore.

Its not whether you win or loose, its how you play the game. Its not the getting there, its how you go the way. What you believe happens at the end of your life is irrelevant and immaterial to anybody else. Time and "reality" is only this second here and now. As long as you are true to yourself and treat others with respect at all times, as you would have them treat you, that is all one needs to know to be on the right and commendable road.
My philosophy.

There is no 'purpose' in life. We should just concentrate on the process, which we are in control of. And what makes you think your purpose will be known after you die?

I think the purpose of sentient beings is that the universe has endeavored to evolve to become self-aware. That includes all form of animal life on this planet (and other planets, if any). More than that, nobody has a clue, except for those that would have you believe they do. As for them, they are full of it. Just my humble opinion.

ooh, existential questions. See heidegger, husserl, Sartre, and others.

The fact is you either don't know why you are here, in which case you will suffer from anxiety.

If you do know why you are here, you are a step ahead of a bigillion humans.

Solution? most resort to either religion, which tells you why you are here (cause / effect depends on your religion). Many resort to substance abuse. Me? I say forget why you are here (since no one governs that except you) and make your own reasons (for existing). See heidegger, in particular. Dasein.

Every being in life has a definite purpose. The difference is that some know it whereas others just exist without really living. Also death is not a finality -just a stage for you to move on to a higher level or consciousness.
