The first time I have ever heard one that wasn't at a firing range was the Monday night in New Orleans after the Hurricane. We heard several during the night.

It is extremely hard to tell without a lot of experience and nearly impossible to explain. Vehicles backfiring can sound like gun shots. Even a car door slammed loudly can sound like a gun shot. However, should you hear a bang than a loud, sharp shrill whistle, that most likely is a bullet ricocheting and 99% of the time it will be a gun shot you've heard. When in doubt, if you live within the city limits, it is best to call in "What sounded like a gunshot." Best. H

If you were in the same room as gun fire, you would probably notice it. Might be firecrackers, but guns are generally loud in close quarters and have a kind of a sharp edge to the sound as compared to a backfire which is a bit more muffled.
Sounds like the footprint club is a good place to avoid.

I've heard gunshots tons of times but I can remember the very first time. It was horrible, my neighbor committed suicide in his garage when I was about 10, and I can remember hearing those gunshots that day.

The only time I've ever heard a gunshot is at the firing range, so it wasn't really scary or surprising. Plus I was wearing earplugs.

my dad used to take me to a shooting range every summer and i heard them all the time. i never really thought much about them until one day, when i lived in saudi arabia, there was a terrorist attack near my house. it's a lot scarier hearing gunshots when you're not at a shooting range.
