Diuretics stimulate the kidneys to produce more urine which will flush excess fluids and minerals, such as sodium, out of the body

The alter the amount of fluid that is returned to the body by the kidney. Normally, your body filters about 500 liters of fluid out a day, but you pee about one, which means your body absorbs the other 499 back. The diuretics make your nephrons more permeable at the top so they leak more and less permeable at the bottom, so they absorb less. More fluid gets left and you end up with more pee. That might not be exaclty it but it has been a few years since anatomy and has been dumbed down a little. Hope it helps.
