I am male, and I need to know a good birthday present for a Female friend of mine. I would normally do this on my own, but females are just so damn confusing.

well u could send her sum flowers in the mornin of her bday then take her outfor lunch. Or you could get her a nice little gift or even make her something most gurls think its the thaught that really counts!!! good luck man xox

Since you're her friend you might know what she likes to do as a hobby or activity. Personally, chocolate being unacceptable to women is a rare occurance. If you've been friends for a long time breakfast or lunch out just to catch up (usually we are all so busy) is kind of nice.
You could get tickets to a cultural event she might like. Setting something up that takes time is always really cool, like if her sister lives far away get her to come visit (and go to the cultural event with her). Depending on how close of friends you are, a surprise party might be fun, just a small one. If your friendship is really casual a book, candle or plant might be nice. If she has pets, something for them (again, casual). Look for clues in her home decor, interests, collections, favorite colors, music, etc.
If there is any reason to believe that she likes you more than just friends (thus the confusion?), I would recommend nothing more than a card, unless you want that to change. Even so, a card would mean more than just a casual "Happy Birthday" because you remembered and made the effort to buy a card.

Its been my experience that if you don't know what sort of gift to get someone, then you probably don't know them well enough to buy them a gift anyways. I am assuming when you say "friend" you mean a girl that you're not romantically interested in. Think about what she likes to do or what she likes to eat/or drink. There's nothing wrong with giving a gift card, if you don't know enough about her to get her something very personal. I would prefer to pick out something I know I'll like than return something after the fact.

Flowers are a good neutral gift that girls love, but not roses, just a bouquet of some kind. Another possibility is a cute T-shirt if you know her size, nothing that would make her think relationship, but are still nice to get from a friend.

honey it depends on how close of a friend she is. there are all sorts of levels for gifts for us girls. if she is just a friend and no other feelings there try a bottle of her favorite perfume.
