My computer is a 1998 Hewlett Packard Pavilion M50. It is running slow. (I know it is older but i can't afford a new Pc right now).. I have defraged, disk cleanup and removed programs, etc. that i do not need or use.

When i was defraging it said that the file system is NTFS (whatever that is) and the capacity is 4.02Gb... Is that normal?
It is a windows XP.
I have the highest speed of cable internet but still it runs slow. Can you help me in fixing my ordeal that i am going through?

Can i update/upgrade through the internet for free? Also if i do need more Ram. How much is that cause someone told me they would do that for me for $70.00 (a computer store)

Help me...Thanks in advance..

To me it sounds like your computer is simply too old. These days even 2-4 years old is out of date. NTFS is the better file system to use, so thats no problem, although your HD is rather small by todays standards. You could consider upgrading it. Also, on a 1998 machine, it may be struggling just to run WinXP. If you have already completed the various maintenance options, theres not a lot more you can do. There certainly isn't any magic software you can download that will speed things up. Upgrading your RAM may help a bit (you didn't mention how much you have) but make sure the chips are compatible with your rather old motherboard.

First of all I'd like to say this "buy a new computer." That being said get ready for a long answer. File sytem can be related to types of writting. For example some people write in cursive so other can read it fast. Where as a computer uses NTFS file system so your computers brain can read stuff on the hard drive fastly. Now I think you can uderstand what capacity is, but if not, its the limit. So when it says your hard drive capacity is 4.02GB it means that you computer, at maximum can hold 4.02Gb worth of information. Upgrading memory would be your best bet. When you put more memory into a computer in lamemans terms your training the brain so it can do more at once. Memory is reffered to ram becasue ram stands for (random access memory). RAM is pretty cheap now a days and it's cheapest if you buy it online. Example web site would be www.newegg.com they have a wide varity of cheap computer parts you can buy. There is another way to speed up your computers start-up time but you have to me a fairly experecned user, however this article should give ou a basic understaing on how to do it (http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/) hope it helps. If you have any questions about what I typed, you can e-mail me at steven007x3@yahoo.com

Running XP on your system is always going to be slow. (Honestly, I'm surprised it even installed.) XP just needs a lot more memory. Buying more RAM memory will NOT get you very far, and there is no use putting more $ into this comp. save up for a new one. For that computer, XP is just not an option.

There are other options though. If you want to stick with windows, the most stable version for you would by Windows NT 4 with the latest Service Packs. If you can get your hands on it, it would probably be ideal for a system like yours.

There are also versions of Linux designed specifically for old computers...and so that anybody can use them. The plus of this is that it's completely free, has a lot of online support, and will have current an up-to-date software running even on older systems. I'm going to recommend PuppyLinux. Check it out, it may be ideal for your situation:

If not, you could go back to the Windows 98 that came with your computer.

Where do you live? I assume it is 70 US dollars?

I am in Singapore and 256mb RAM costs around $40 second hand (plus/minus) depending on the type of ram you use.
Its best to do thorough survey before you decide to seek their services.

On the other hand, getting their help means you know more or less your pc will be "in good hands". Just ask if there is lifetime warranty for the RAM, is it brand new, and if the computer shop will provide you with warranty for a certain period i.e 2 or 3 months.

4.02gb is normal for older pcs...
You mentioned that you are using windows XP. Can I ask what is your computer system? is it Pentium 1, or 2 or 3?

For XP, recommended is at least pentium 3, with 256mb ram minimum. Check in your system control panel to see if this is what your have.

If you don't, maybe you can consider formatting your pc to windows 98..or ME...

cheers!

You need more RAM, of course, but you need, also, another hard drive (at least 40GB).

Before upgrade your computer, ask in the same store if is not better to buy a new machine. I think that the processor and the video card are also out of date. Really, I don´t think that is a good idea to upgrade.

well, is the whole computer slow or just the internet?
if the whole computer is, then try to have as few things in the systray as possible (the right hand bottom near the clock)
i only have the firewall and antivirus there. things in the systray use up system memory. as for the internet there are many speed test pages like http://www.dslreports.com that will test and analyse and sugest ways to tweak your internet speeds.

using tools like "system mechanic" that can clean your registry and auto starting programs, and also tweak your registry for intenet speed , are also helpfull.

another program that tweeks internet speed is called cablenut.

There are many reasons your computer is slow, but considering the age of the machine, you should just get a new one. If you have a friend who knows what they are doing, they can build you a pretty good machine for $400. It won't be a good machine to play graphics-intensive games, but it will allow you to do your work and get on the net.

the fan is dusty and in all risk its bearings provide out the sound. many times some oil fixes it for me yet i do no longer recommend to try this because of the fact in case you do no longer comprehend what you're doing you may wreck the full concern. (the technique comprises removing the fan, and the decal from it, including some drops of oil to the bearings then assembly all back jointly) That whether in all risk has no longer something to do with the slowness. (it ought to do yet no longer likely) in case you put in homestead windows a protracted time in the past that could be the situation: after a time in case you put in and uninstalled a great form of courses it ought to develop into sluggish. you may try the followings: defragment the gadget force uninstall all no longer needed courses swap off startup products if no longer needed to be vehicle initiate (e.g. acrobat reader, msn messenger, diverse speedy launch courses and so on) significantly: reinstall homestead windows, or improve the present one or purchase a clean speedier one.

I have 57,262 mb capacity or 261,616 kb of ram.I do not understand gb & kb. If I get much under 80% on my capacity mine slows down real quick. Sorry I can't give you a real answer. My computer is a 2000 model so it has nothing to do with age!!
