Maybe because perhaps you're used to being a people pleaser, and when you're assertive you're taking the risk of not being liked. I understand because it is also a challenge for me. But I guess what helps me is to think that I am not being mean, I'm just not letting people step all over me and I'm setting boundaries. You'll find that ultimately when you're assertive, people respect you more. Don't worry whether they will like you or not. If they don't, it's ok because you don't need that kind of people in your life.

Some people go through life leading while others follow. I'm not saying that you are either but follow your own lead. Do you lack the confidence or the self-esteem to stand up for yourself? Are you a people-pleaser? A doormat? Take steps to pick up your self-esteem. You'll see that people really don't care. Anxiety is felt by everyone at some time or another.

Because it's taking you out of your comfort zone and you probably were not raised to be assertive, especially if you are female.

I, being introverted and shy, have experienced this. However, keep on being assertive-not aggressive-until it begins to feel comfortable for you.
