Force equals mass times acceleration

The British physicist, Sir Isaac Newton (1642–1727) studied the theoretical relationship between force and motion. He showed that the rate of change of velocity (i.e. acceleration) is proportional to the force applied and that it is directed along the straight line in which the force acts.



If force is designated by F and the rate of change of velocity by a, this relationship can be expressed as

F = m · a

This is a fundamental law of classic dynamics, Newton's Second Law of Motion. The quantity m in the equation is a proportionality constant that constitutes a measure of the mass of the body that is accelerated.
