Get a gravel vac and vac the gravel when you do your water changes to keep the muck from building up in the rock. The muck build up can harbor bad anerobic bacteria and also build pockets of gas that is toxic. Water changes need to be done weekly and test your water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and PH, preferably drop kits. Also use a good ammonia binder/dechlor such as Prime. If you have sity water then it has chlorine or Chloranine in it and this needs bound. Alway's start with water tests when there is fish loss. Its the first place to look and start ruling things out.

Firstly do you everything you need to keep a freshwater tank? you need a tank (obviously) a heater, a filter, and if you're using fake plants you'll need an airpump that is connected to an airstone using airline . You also need to clean the gravel of your tank every week or so and clean out the filter aswell. You should do a water 20% water change every 2 weeks aswell. Also don't over feed your fish, the uneaten food will rot and poison the water. Get a testing kit from your local petstore.
What type of filtration do have, how long has your setup been running, do you have enough for the plants if they are live plants, how much and how often do you feed the fish, how often do you do water changes, how often do you clean your filtration system, how often do you clean the gravel? Answering these questions can help us give you better advice.

brown stuff is probably algae, a little algae is ok but it sounds like the kind you have and the amount you have is not good, it will kill the fish. you need to wipe the brown stuff off the surfaces and scoop out any that you can. Change 25% of your water in the tank, no more no less. Do this water change once a week (no more) For best results continue the water changes each week for the life of the tank. Expose the tank to less light. If the tank is in direct sunlight, invest in curtains or blinds (too mush light is BAD). Remeber to change your filters

It sounds like you have some sort of algae problem. You have a few choices, you can go and get a chinese algae eater and add it to the tank, you can get the algae destroyer tablets or you can just do a partial and clean the algae out with a scrubber that you can get at a pet store that you use in tanks. You may want to check your levels with the strips that can be bought at a pet store. Good Luck!

Algae is the brown stuff. When was the last time you done a water change? Also, is this tank newly set up? You do need to get water tested.

First thing I would do is bring in a water sample to either a PetSmart or a PetCo .. they will test the water for you and tell you what is wrong with it . Do it right away. Good Luck ! :)

That just sounds like Diatoms. That's probably not the issue.

However - what are your water parameters currently like? (i.e. Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates, pH)???
