Unless there is reason to believe you are high risk, an ultrasound prior to your 5th month is pointless. You can't tell anything important until then. Yes lots of doctors do it earlier and repeatedly these days, because they can bill the insurance for it and it makes the moms happy. It is not neccessary. However, you probably should see your doctor for a check-up at least once before then, although I suppose if you are not having any issues that could be foregone as well. Once you reach your 7th month you will need to start going every 2-weeks, then every week in the 8th month. If you do not have insurance, you are looking at $10-20K.

Unless you have a high-risk pregnancy most doctors will do the first ultra sound at around 12 weeks (Unless you don't know the date of your last period). There are blood/urine tests to check your kidney function and other things. The hospital will charge for every little thing....even Q-tips

Our bills were around $3000, but that didn't include the 9 months of doctor visits. As for the ultra sound, I never had one. My doctor told me that if there didn't seem to be a problem, it's best not to do one. I was disappointed, but I have heard that sometimes it isn't good to have one done.

Your doctor or midwife will let you know when they want you to get your first ultrasound. If you're unsure of your last period's date, they will probably do one soon. Otherwise, they usually don't schedule them until closer to the middle of your pregnancy.
The cost can vary a great deal depending on who your provider is, where you're having the baby, etc. Midwives are much cheaper than doctors (and much better in my opinion).

I have about $2000 in bills after my insurance. Before my insurance it was nearly $30,000, but I had a c-section. You will get an ultrasound around 20weeks for sure. Possibly one around 8-12 weeks. Good luck!!!
