I also had viral meningitis many years ago - I still remember the pain of moving my eyes up or down or side to side, it was nasty.

I'm glad you got the help you needed, but be aware that it is a virus, and as such is not gone. If I get very run down or stressed, I get little bouts of it. I've now grown to recognise the onset of that horrible bad hangover feeling in my neck and head, and if I get a couple of max strength aspirin in me before the temp goes up, it usually nips it in the bud. If I'm too late getting that first dose in - it will last a cycle of three days, when I'm pretty sick again. That's only happened three times - once when I was pregnant and couldn't take aspirin, once when I happened to have a tummy bug and couldn't keep anything down, and another time when I was on holidays and stupidly forgot to bring any. It was the next day before I could get any, and by then I was well into it.

Panadol, codeine or tylenol will not work for me at all - only aspirin. By the way, tyleno was what I used for two weeks before I was dragged off to the doctor by my friends - I think I was using about 4 times the max dose each day in the end!

So - I'm glad you got the help, but make sure you look after your health from now on so you don't get any complications.

Unlike bacterial meningitis, viral meningitis is not usually life threatening in a normally healthy person, and while the most usual viruses that cause meningitis are contagious, they will not usually result in the person who catches the virus developing meningitis.
