He provided entertainment. His plays actually weren't just for the poor people, as someone above me answered. Wealthy people, including Queen Elizabeth I, went to his plays. The poorer people also attended, but they had standing room only instead of seats.

Shakespeare wrote many plays, and actually invented words that are now used today.

shakespeare in himself maybe not so much. however as part of the renaissance, the whole movement changed the society. the society went from being a bunch of ignorrants to having people like leonardo da vinci and galileo galilei who didn't take the bible for granted and went and studied for themselves. the movement changed the attitude. and it loosened the spirits a little.

if you want - compare the portraits of the kings before and after the rennaisance and you will notice how they are wearing much less sober clothes. that is just a sign of how the world stopped being so (i could use the term medieval but in this context it wouldn't say much) enclosed.

shakespeare was part of that. he promoted theatre - before him theatre was indeed for the lower classes, but he got to play for queen elizabeth (who was definitely not lower class). the theatre spread (not just shakespeare's there are many other great playwrights in that time period). the culture spread. the world did no longer revolve around the church.
