An EP is generally shorter than an LP, and is often a band's "first release". Tool's first major release is called Opiate and has six tracks on it. Another example is what Nine Inch Nails does, where the EP is just a few remixes of songs from the last studio album; or even just a bunch of songs that they were ready to release but didn't have a full length album for, like Broken.
Edit: Yes, Extended Play and Long Play are the terms, I forgot to put that in.

No idea what it stands for, but I think it implies a shorter album than an LP. Like for a single. Or maybe it just runs at a different speed. I have no idea quite honestly, and I trying to figure out why I am still writing an answer for this question...

i beleive it is an extended play.....based from when you had singles and lps.
