1. what is chemistry?

chemistry is the study of the materials and substances of the world in which we live. the materials which make up the earth, sea and air are called raw materials. these include many important natural resources like ores, rocks, coal, oil and gas.

2.Why is the study of chemistry important to the understanding of a living things?

since most raw materials are non renewable(cannot be replaced) and some like coal oil and gas will soon be used up, we have to find an alternatives for such materials. a chemist job is to investigate such raw materials and to find out their properties. By far the most important natural resources for man are plants and the food they provide.with the increase in population throughout the world, there is now muh greater demand for crops and foodstuff. therefore, chemists also help producing fertilisers, insecticides, pesticides etc. which increase the crop yield and help to make farming more efficient and help to improve the quality and storage of foods with the use of additives, preservatives.
It is for this reason the fact that chemistry is everywhere and does affect all aspects of our lives, that it is necessary to study it.

3.How is active transport different from osmosis?

osmosis is a passive process(free-energy)moving from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. it requires a partially permeable membrane and refers only to water(solvent molecules)
active transport on the other hand needs energy and move from lower to higher concentration without the requirements of any membrane. it occurs only in living cells as only living cells respire.
got the picture? lol

hope this helps..
gd luck and take care :)

A living thing is simply a mass of not-so-simple chemical reactions all happening at the same time. Studying chemistry is studying how that living thing runs.

Active transport uses energy (usually in the form of ATP). Osmosis is the simple diffusion of water which does not require energy, just a permeable membrane and a concentration gradient.
