I've been practicing hard and want to try something new. I tried to swim freestyle without kicking; however, my legs kept on sinking. I then tried to lock my back and my legs straight to recover, and it only worked a bit. What's the proper way to swim fs without the kicks? How do disabled people swim?

Practice with a bouey (sp). They are foam floating things you can buy I don't think they're very expensive, or if you swim at a gym they should provide flippers and leg boueys you put between your legs. Try doing the freestyle with your head up (like they do in water polo) stroking your arms in front of you instead of just to the side.

You have 2 options: either use a pull buoy or wear a wetsuit. You put the pull buoy between your legs and they should float. This allows you to work on you upper body w/o the extra drag of you legs. It also helps keep your body in a good line while you are not kicking. You can also acheive a similar effect if you wear a wet suit for open water swims. The wet suit will provide excellent buoyancy while swimming. For most triathlons, most competitors will wear a wet suit and won't kick during the swim in order to save their legs for the bike and run.

Pull buoys cost about $10 - $15 while a tri wet suit will cost $100 - $300, so you are better off buying a pull buoy.

you get a partner and they hold your feet and they kick so it's like a drill, it makes you pull more.

Or you can get a floaty, but it's not that much of a work out
