It's bubbles of Carbon Dioxide coming out of solution in the fluid between your joints when you sit because the volume increases in the joint and then having the bubble collapsing again when the volume decreases and pressure increases (when you stand up again), it's normal, like clicking your fingers.
Think of a bottle of coke, if the lid is on then the CO2 stays in solution, when you open the lid the bubbles appear.

OK i have had knee problems from way back 14 operations on the left knee 6 on the right. it started out with clicking and a grinding feeling. it started after a motorcycle accident. the clicking was from the patella sliding out of place sometimes the knee would lock up. have you injured your knees?
are you on your knees to scrub floors a lot.? that could be a cause of it also. and they call it house maids knees. either Way please see a orthopedic doctor clicking or grinding can be a serious disease of the bones and you being a woman can be suffering from calcium loss .

My knee makes a "crunching" noise when I walk upstairs. I feel like a fat bloated pig trying to make it to the feed trough when it does that. Anyway, mine started doing that when I spent all summer walking up and down flights of stairs for my job. I will be interested in what people say about your question.

Its in all risk no longer something to agonize approximately, yet a visit to the medical doctors just to earnings it out. i think of you have dry joints. in case you run upstairs generally they could sense vulnerable and harm in case you weren't used to doing this often.

i am no doctor or anything and this is straight from my knowledge but you should have yuor knees checked by a doctor or you might be cracking them when you squat similar to how you crack yuor knuckles it could also be similar to why elderly peoples hips crack.
