Two countries go to war, yours wins. The other guys were doing something unworkable or less efficient. So a succesion of wars throghout history reward efficiency and punish anacronism, making life better and better.
The few places on earth so isolated they never face war have statgnant cultures that do not evolve.

War in the past has been responsible for many of the things that make modern living much easier- microwaves, mass production of penicilin, LCD screens- just a few off the top of my head. Basicly war creats a need for productivity and invention.
Also there are some thet say it has been important in the development of societies, generally the less advanced societies will be wiped out in a war. Some italian nazi bloke who was part of a movement called futurism(can't remember his name) wrote about war as the "sole cleanser of society", meaning that it clears up all the weak and inferior therefore enabling natural selection and the development of the human race both genetically and technologically. I'm going to search for it on google now.

there is no beauty in war. but it does, unfortunatly improve the man's life.
for example: in the first world war the men were gone to fight and the women stayed home. but someone had to work and since there were no men anymore, the women worked. this developed, in the women who were themselves taught that they were only to cook and have kids, a new sense of responsability. it showed them that they could do what a man did. basically the first world war rushed the feminist movement and the equality of the sexes. had the first world war not happened the women would have gained their independence (so to speak) much much later. that is one example of life improvement brought on by the war.
it is however, your call to decide whether that life improvement (and others...) is worth the huge human sacrifice that the 1st world war represented.

Urbancoyote is right, unfortunately. Yes, the progress is accelerated by the needs of the war. Isn't that sad, though? Isn't calling "progress" discovering new ways to kill each other an absurd thing to do? I'd say it is. Anyway, because Urbancoyote gave you the answer that I wanted to give, I found another one: the secret beauty of war is that, in some cases, the ones who started them die along with their soldiers. I spoke.

Urbancoy.. is right. without war people get lazy and there is no incentive to invent anything. Most civilizations died because of social reforms and overpopulation without building the infrastructure to accomodate it
