words of wisdom
only in the sense
that they "wised" me up...
i was barely 18
a freshman at the u of miami
taking a psychology course.
in the first week,
the class was divided into groups
so we could play simsoc
http://www.wovenstory.com/SIMSOC.html
a simulated society game
each group was a different society
no specific roles were assigned to any person
we were barely given direction
each group was located in a different room
this class met mwf
each class period was devoted to
taking attendance
and playing simsoc
by the end of the second week
the professor stopped the game.
he said it was supposed to take the whole semester
but that because of one individual's
organizational and persuasive skills
all of the "societies" had formed
governments, infrastructure, hosp/media/housing/rec. etc.
and
were interacting w/each other in trade, etc.
that the only thing left to do was
start fighting...go to war...
to keep us interested
and,
he said that individual
was me
which,
strangely enough
i had not been aware of
i had been just having a good time
and "goofing" around
thinking up stuff
and talking up my game to the other students
--but in a non-aggressive manner
(in hs, although i played soccer and was 4th in the class, i really pretty much hung w/a small group...drummers & "long-hairs")
so,
here i was,
early in my first college semester,
being told by a professor
(who was considered pretty hip & edgy---even for miami)
that for the first time in his long career
a student had checked him
(and i was it)
and,
it made me feel...
validated
in a way that
i'm probably not getting across
but,
anyway...
looking back
to that whole scene
i know it was the point that
showed me for real
that we're all gonna find our own people
no matter how
eclectic
after that class
i pretty much didn't show up there anymore
or, to my other classes either
hung a lot in the music dept.
(no prob. w/them since i had a scholarship for the drum thing)
i remember our percussion ensemble cut a record
(only a few tracks)
did the parties/beach stuff
and, that summer
hitch-hiked to ca
crazy
i guess the "words of wisdom"
were his words
giving me
self-wisdom
...for what it's worth

I have two that have made an impact on my life...
1-What good is being the best, when it brings out the worst in you?
2-Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
=-)
I don't remember where I originally heard the second one...the first one, actually came from the movie Ladybugs with Rodney Dangerfield...kinda odd, yes, but a powerful message

Be the best person you can be let all else fall into place.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (limited).
Revenge is sweet and best served cold. You can turn the tables as well as turn the other cheek.
Turnabout is fair play so are double meanings and other languages and places and references.
Vaya con dios. Go with God.
Take care, be careful out there.

dont sweat the small stuff in life. my daughter had leukemia and i realized that all that small stuff i was worrying about meant nothing. she is alive and well and 11 yrs. in remission. i dont worry much about little things anymore. life is too short to sweat over small stuff, like is my house cleaned today or how am i going to pay this bill or anything that really wouldnt matter at all if you are god forbid ever faced with something like a life threatening illness.

Life is short, play naked!
My grandfather also had a couple of good sayings:
1)Don't lose your head, it's the best part of your body.
2)Patience is a virgin (think about that one for a moment!).
