I recently read that NASCAR drivers refused to answer the question about the confederate flag flying (still) at races. What's your take on this? Please note that I am not asking about the flag, but about the drivers. What are they afraid of? Can NASCAR every truly get rid of its tainted image? 10 points for the most objective answer and show some respect please. This goes for all. Thank you.

Ok...when I said this is not asking about the flag, but about the driver response, what part is a little confusing...come on people stick with the question. Don't go off on a tangent. It's not about the flag. Did I say that already? Sorry to repeat. I'm asking about the drivers, I asked nothing about the war or slavery. Said nothing to the effect.

Cindy M...could you be more specific? What interview are you talking about and where is it posted?

Thanks to all of you who actually answered the question I asked. It seems like the fans are the ones, as shown here, who make it an issue. I specifically asked about the drivers and not the flag. I could care less about it. I was trying to get to the bigger picture here. Is there anyone out there who can understand this question, or do I really need to dress down the lines here? Why NASCAR drivers won't answer was the question. I know Jr. answered, lame as it was, but I give him respect for it. Let's talk about what's become of the sport though. Again, to all of those who have answered the actual question, Thank You! They have been helpful to a lot of other people, and me in some odd, twisted way...LOL!

because thier opinion doesn't count it would only stir ire amongst fans and sponsors
i read the article too
it was a reporter wasting time and ink on a non-subject
as it said the flag means many different things to different people

to me it means (american)southern roots
to a racist (white or black) it means other things

i guess some dont realize the war ended...and the south lost

I'm not too sure that it is really an issue that the drivers have spent much time thinking about. The sport has moved beyond its southern roots and as such I'm sure that most of the drivers haven't made it an issue. To be honest, like a lot of Americans, they don't have feelings one way or the other. With that, I'm sure that the flag doesn't really have much significance to most of the drivers and that's why they don't really have an opinion.

Because what does the confederate flag have to do with the drivers? NOTHING! I don't think NASCAR has a tainted image...people who don't like NASCAR are the ones who think that for the most part. By the way are you saying that the tracks themselves fly the confederate flag? Or are you referring to the fans flying it at their own campsites? It means different things to different people; and while I myself would not fly one, I am not offended by it. Yes, the war ended long ago but the confederate flag is part of US history, like it or not. I am far more offended by people who fly the Mexican flag here in the US.

1 Nascars image is only tainted by people that choose to do so it has always been a great sport where the entire family can go to
2 maybe the driver just feel that the question is not worthy of an nswer because it has nothing to do with them
3 It is time everyone stopped worrying how PC they are

They don't want to lose fans or make their fans angry. If a driver says they support the confederate flag, then black fans may assume he is racist and the media would try to make him look racist as well. On the other hand, if they say they are against it, then the fans that fly the flag will probably get mad at that driver and not cheer for them anymore. I hope this makes sense and you might understand it a little more now.

Actually your question is not entirely true. Jr has commented on the flag when asked. He has stated that he does not agree or condone those that use the flag for "racist" purposes. He also stated that he sees the flag everywhere but there is nothing you can do about banning it.

you know years ago i used to think that the rebel flag was a sign of intolerance and should be loathed by any educated practical person. then i began to socialize with blacks and realized that they were just as racist as any redneck i had ever met. they want to display their African heritage and their militant anti-white leaders with complete freedom and anonymity. so then i thought hell why do they get to have freedom of speech and not me???? can i not be proud of whatever i want just as they????? if my ancestors fought in the civil war can i not be proud of that fact????? so my take of it now is that i will gladly display the flag whenever possible. not so much as to provoke, but as a sign of my freedom to do so. so to all of you blacks i say whenever you denounce your heritage then so will i. until that day i will fly the stars and bars like it or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't make both sides happy, so they will keep their mouth shut. If they are for it, those that are not will shun them. If they are not for it, those that are will shun them. They can not win. This is nothing new, politicians have been doing it for years.
