you want to pay 30,000 dollars a year (on average) for prisoners?

That's more than I'm making per year (given that I'm a college student) and that money for their useless lives could go for my college grant. So destroy the useless or ship them to a Siberian-like place... it worked for the Reds...

We don't!

Capital punishment:
1. Is more expensive than life in prison--that it is not is a myth
2. Is racist (don't believe me, do some research. One case involved 3 guys who robbed a store and a woman was killed. The two white guys got off with different sentences, and the black guy who stood guard by the door and was not directly involved got the death penalty.)
3. studies show that families of victims do not get any relief from seeing the perp put to death. Forgiveness is the only thing that heals.
4. Life is sacred.
5. The legal system is screwed up--prosecutors hide evidence that would exonerate the defense.
6. I don't find it Biblical. I have seen all the verses in the Bible people use to back it up. They are archaic or grossly misquoted (the worst one I saw was where peter cut off the guard's ear and Jesus said "he who lives by the sword will die by the sword" and the author's conclusion that was God was pro-death penalty because of that). People ignore the God is love, forgiving, and turn the other cheek verses. But even if I did find it Biblical, flaws in the legal system and other evidences are enough to turn me off to it until we fix those problems.
7. States that incorporate the death penalty actually have a HIGHER murder rate, so so much for deterrence
8. It perpetuates the cycle of violence--someone killed someone, so we kill him back.

Given the fact that the death penalty is not always fair along
racial or economic lines, the 98% of us who respect each
other really have no choice but to level the ultimate penalty on the
2% who have no regard for us.

capital punishment was created as a deterrent to crime...however, since our society has given so many rights and privileges to criminals, they sit in jail until they die of old age instead of getting the chair, it is no longer a threatening prospect because the likelihood of follow through is statistically nominal....
IF the country would just grow a back bone and start implementing the death penalty and Judges would APPLY the laws to criminals instead of legislating from the bench, laws would be respected, not scoffed.

The death penalty does not deter crime. Either you commit a crime in the heat of the moment when you're not thinking about the consequences or you are a professional criminal who knows the consequences and doesn't care. And it does cost more to put someone to death because of the years of appeals we have to pay for to get them there.

As far as getting rid of the death penalty being "soft on crime," here's how I judge it. If I was faced with the prospect of spending life in prison, I'd do everything I possibly could to kill myself.

I wish the death penalty was more prevalent. I know, I know. The statistics show it doesn't deter crime and i am sure it is more expensive than sitting in jail. But i mean come on... These criminals kill innocent people and destroy their lives. The statistics would be different if we used an effective and quick death penalty system. Why let them sit in jail and play cards all day? Only liberals would argue for criminals as they have done here. PROTECT THE CRIMINALS!!!!! (they say).

It isn't an economic question conservatives. Stop thinking with your wallets.

We don't need it. Given how many times our court system has convicted innocent people (especially in Texas), I'd say that in itself is the overriding argument against it. An innocent dead person is a far greater crime.

Do: because it assures that the prisoner wont escape. It keeps them off the streets.
Don't: because there are inocent people who have the punishment and they get killed
