I believe it is a skill. Not to be confused with aggression, which is totally different. Assertiveness is learning to get your needs met in a positive way.

I think its a little of both. You can train yourself to be assertive but some people are naturally assertive. I use to be assertive and confident, but now I'm more passive and not as confident. My example leans more towards a skill that I have forgotten. If it was a personality trait, I would still be assertive.

I wouldn't say a skill. Skills are like typing, auto mechanics, cooking, stuff that you learn to do. Assertiveness is more of a trait I guess. It's an important aspect in developing many skills though, such as interpersonal communication and leadership abilities.

A personality trait. Some people are just naturally assertive. You may try to learn how to be more assertive, but how much can you really change who you are?

To some it is a skill. But don't worry, when u practice it considering it a personality trait you can cultivate. Take the responsibility and be assertive. Cultivate that habit if you don't have!

I think it is a combination. One might have the trait to be assertive and then, because of exposure to certain situations, you hone your skill at being assertive.

It is something you learn. You are either born into it, learning it by example or you learn it as a result of being a victim of it, from someone else. Either way, you learn it eventually.
Either way. I am going to have to go with a skill that just happens to become a distinctive feature of a persons well rounded fully developed personality.

a little bit of both. some people are naturally assertive, in which case it's more of a personality trait.
some people are not naturally assertive, but they can learn to be, if they are put in situations where that characteristic is required in order to thrive.

I believe it is a skill borne from the ability to pick the middle road between passive and aggressive. On the one hand we do not want to be walked on and it is just as bad to walk all over others.
