The French (much like the English) were interested in land. Oddly enough, this is why they dealt with the indigenous people more gently then the Spanish, who used war, and religious slavery. This is because their goal was gold.
Obviously they took land too, but they were willing to invade locations specifically for the gold, while the French and English moved at the pace at which their populations expanded. Much slower.
As such, the indians in the lands that the French and English moved into were treated with more respect, (not a lot in the long run of course) and were, for the most part, spared slavery.

Well, think about it... Hispanic people used to be natives. They were forced to learn a new language, give up their religion and become Catholics, and slaughtered by the tens of thousands by the Spanish because they believed it was thir duty. I'm sure that not many people spoke sanish in mexico and th surrounding area in 1500. The only reason that the american natives weren't converted was because of the French, who beat the Spanish to North America, made friends with them, and fought alongside them in wars. Also, the French, unlike other countries, sent very few "eilitists", and actually attempted to get along with the natives.

The natives remember and pass down stories even today.

In California, some of the Spanish had a bad habit of turning native americans into forced labor. Some members of the Chumash tribe prefered suicide rather than suffer & die under Spanish rule.

The French treated the Natives with respect. They fairly traded with them and did not exploit them for their goods. They would trade whatever goods that the Natives wanted and did not prohibit the Native's land use.

Spaniards forced a lot of religion down native throats literally. The French were a lot cooler with religion and they had croissants.
