Dragon like beings once existed?

The first cultures to start recording their history mention dragons. It might well be the stories originated among early humans, and they simply took the stories with them as they migrated.

As for what made the stories appear, there are a lot of possibilities. The truth is probably a mixture of all of them. Dinosaur bones are called dragon bones, particularly in places like China. I think it's overly simplistic to say they are the only cause of dragon myths. People seemed to have been inspired by all sorts of things.

There are natural animals like giant snakes and crocodiles. There have been cases of 'dragon' skins being tested in the modern era, and being found to be crocodiles. There may also be undiscovered animals. Another idea is that it was a reaction to instinctive human fears. I've seen it suggested the fear is dinosaurs (from early mammal ancestors) and predators in general (dragons often have features of reptiles, birds of prey and large cats).

A documentary I saw linked dragons with the finding dinosaur fossils and early man's inability to know when the beasts actually died. Since dinosaur remains are found on the same continents as humans, it is not hard to see how each culture came upon the fossils and thought they were dealing with something that had died recently or found old dinosaur tracks and thought the thing recently passed by. Each culture though interpretted the dragons-in Europe, they were often a horrible beast, for example, while in Asia, they were supernatural agents.

The dragon is symbolic. It represents a person who wakes Kundalini (which snakes around the spine as it rises) for purely spiritual means (which is why it has wings). This would be an extremely rare person, but the potential is in all of us.

Dinasaur bones/ fosils let imaginations go wild ... living reptiles (snakes, lizards, dragons, alligators, etc-etc-etc) make it possible & are real threats to primative humans ... geographical coincidences (fog, sulfar springs) promt primative humans to fear the unknown linking the most scary image to the scary geographical landscapes ... & shared stories getting more imaginative with each story teller.

agree with the other answers here. dinosaur bones were found and the legends of dragons and other mythological beings sprang up in order to explain the remains found.
