My instruction manual that came with the dishwasher said to alternate them. I gather that is because then the spoons and forks won't nest and not get cleaned. My dishwasher has the silverware basket on the door and I don't know if that makes any difference, though. Hubby definitely takes it seriously because I see him flipping silverware if I have too many spoons or forks in a particular slot all going the same direction.

I put most of my silverware facing up because I figure more soap and water hits it that way without the obstruction of the basket.I have no idea if theres any science to back this up. Thats just the way I do it. The only exception to this is that I put my knives facing down now that my daughter is old enough to want to help with the dishes. I dont want her grabbing one of the sharp edges

I had a friend who went to empty the dishwasher, as she reached in she put the tine of the fork all the way under her fingernail . She jammed it good. So since seeing that happen, I have ALWAYS put me forks & knives down . I do put the spons up

Put the spoons up but forks and knives should face down. People have tripped and fallen onto knives in their dishwasher before. I imagine that to be a sucky way to die.

yes both ways. You want to keep the utensils from "tucking" together so that the water can't wash all sides. Doing a mix so that all the spoons and knives are not in one area is best.

Everything goes up except for knives (I've run a sharp knife under my finger nail one too many times- all I can say is OUCH!) But, I have to admit, if it's late and I'm just exhausted, things just go in there which ever way they land...lol.

I turn it point down, because i'm afraid of being stabbed by the knives and forks! and then i turn the spoons down in the interest of conformitty.

UP...except knives...for safety because I have little ones. The water cannot spray thru the basket on the bottom good enough to clean.

Face down. It's safer when you are unloading it. Don't get poked by forks and knives.
