I just let my dog in for his right before bedtime potty and found out that he got sprayed by a skunk. Needless to say he did not want to go back out, so after chasing him all around the house, I finally got him back out. Problem is, now my house stinks! The skunk got him pretty bad because there are some wet spots on the deck where the stink dripped off him while he was waiting to come in. I already sprayed air freshener but it still reeks! HELP!!

I have some ideas on how to get the smell of the dog, I am mainly concerned about the house. It is 11:16 at night here and it is too late for me to leave the windows open and still feel safe. Also, the dog will stay outside all night as I can't go get the stuff to clean him up, the 2 little ones are already in bed and there is no one else to get the stuff.

I know they say a tomato juice bath but it is actually a myth and smarter to use water mixed with vinegar and a little dish soap. Try use something neutral to spray the house with like a neutralizing deodorizer and definitely air out the house.

**This is called "olfactory fatigue." At that point, the tomato juice you've just bathed your pet with is a new smell that your nose is not used to yet. After a while, though, the tomato juice smell will go away and that skunk odor will come back.

Wash your dog in something tomato based. Sounds weird but it works for some reason. Then air your house out as much a possible. Spraying air freshener won't work since the smell comes from liquid on the floor. Use fabreeze or lay down baby powder and then vacuum it up. It works pretty well.
My dogs like to play with the woodland creatures too unfortunately...

Air the house out, it takes some time to get rid of the smell and covering it with another smell can make it worse. This may sound odd, but pour tomato juice on the dog and the spots on the deck.

Well I can tell you our dogs have been sprayed MANY a time...we have a farm and them darn skunks LOVE chicken eggs lol....anyway what we do...and it works GREAT is wash the dog with dish soap....you need something that cuts grease well because a skunks spray is oil based. after washing a rinsing him off take some baking soda and work it into the fur....don't be shy us a lot...then take some hydrogen peroxide and pour some onto your hand and work it into the fur....you don't really need a lot....towel dry....and no more stinky skunk smell. You could try this on your deck as well.....best of luck....Gezz I can smell him from here lol

air fresheners will only make the smell worse, open all your windows and put some pure vinegar in a few bowls and let them sit put on ceiling fans if you have them to circulate the vinegar and also so you do not over power yourself with the pungunt smell. For the dog a few bottle of (beleive it or not) Lady Vinegar Douche bottles, largers dogs about 4 of them.. It works, It did with my hound. Good luck and sleep well. O and close doors to your bedrooms...

I agree with the tomato juice thing. I take the nastiest tasting blood pressure medicine and if it weren't for swallowing it with tomato juice --- I swear I'd die! I saw the tomato juice--- skunk idea on the Partridge Family. Danny had a fateful encounter with Pepe Le Pew!

quick, open the windows. turn on the fans and get that smell out of there. if you have rugs you might need some of that arm and hammer powder and vacume them. spray off the deck and the dog with the hose.

Milk
or
Tomato juice
