Is it because he did not make a long walk to this nation's capital and make a big speech, or is it because he was ready to fight and did not let the white man run him over.

partially becasue he wasn't going to jsut bend over and take it...but mostly because he wasn't a Christian and no one want to make a NON-christian into a model for anyting....simple religious prejudice, especially since, just before he was killed he ahd discovered the peaceful side of Islam and had begun to espouse the peace and brotherhood of it. Making him an Icon would mean recognizing that Islam HAS a peaceful side and americans won't do that in the curren tpolitical climate, any more than they will acept that non-christians are not satanists.

While the peaceful side of Islam is a definite answer to this question, there is also the fact that he didn't want to be an American Citizen. He wanted to be a black male who happened to be living in the United States. Cashus Clay (Muhammed Ali) the famous Boxer, is a prime example of Malcolm X's influence. He got Clay to change his name from a "slave name" to an "african name". He wanted his cake and to eat it too. You can't be a citizen of the United States of America and not conform to its rules.

I believe it was because he stirred up a lot of controversy, especially with his background as a drug dealer and other things. With the famous moniker ..."By any means necessary", it is to be said he promoted violence. Malcolm X was a deep person.

i worked for 12 years with a very diverse crowd and had a good friend who was african american for most of those years (still do); i know from my friend that Malcolm X continues to have a very strong position in the minds of many black americans, however, they might not necessarily agree with his methods.
