Im going to jump on the bandwagon and say World of Warcraft. With the expansion coming out soon and showing alot of promise, this game will be #1 for a long time.
I disagree with the post above saying you have to know the storyine, I jumped into WoW without knowing much about the storyline. What kept me were the spectacular graphics, very enveloping game play and quest system, and the fact that most my RL friends were playing.
The game can be whatever you want it to be, weather your a hardcore pvper, carebare pve person, or geeky RPG type, WoW has it all.

i have a necro on eqii and a warlock & hunter on wow. i started playing eqii first and thought that it was great! i loved the graphics and the gameplay. then, i thought that the wow toon were too "cartoon" for me. then i got to level 46 and had to stop. i couldn't do anything solo. all the questes sucked and grinding was a complete waste of time. got into wow at this point and was able to level my lock without much assistance to level 60 2 month quicker than i was able to get to level 46 with my necro. the quests for wow are alot more enjoyable to do. the tradeskills are not as fun as the orginally tradeskill system eqii had (but that has changed too). with the amount of people on wow, there a chance that you'll know real people that plays. i have not yet to find someone who plays eqii, outside my small group of friends. you'll have more fun playing with friends and some really hard core wow freaks.

i could recommend the two The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, or Dragon Age: Origins. the two great video games, the latter is slightly extra like WoW in terms of wrestle, kit and interface, yet lacks the open international exploration and deep storyline of the former. i could additionally recommend getting the sequel to Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which comes out this November. The trailer on my own jogs my memory of Northrend, that's sufficient to get nostalgia flowing. desire this permits!
