I think he was supposed to die, but then at the end he got her message in time and didn't step out into traffic and so changed the course of history, or something like that. Like he died, then she realized how he died and warned him, and then he didn't die because she knew he died, if that makes sense. He actually lived at the lake house before she did, and the first letter she left in the mailbox was intended for the next tenant, but she didn't know the mailbox was magic and would send the letter back in time to the day when he moved in. She mentioned that the dog came with the place, and as he was reading that, the dog came up at the same moment, and he kept it. A lot of things about the plot are confusing, which I think detracts from enjoying the movie.

On Valentines Day in 2006 he is supposed to die and there is nothing she can do at that point to save him so she goes back to the Lake House to leave a note for the next tennant who she thinks is a soldier but apparently there is no new tenant. In a freak time loop some how related to the dog who I think is a genie, the notes she writes go back intime to the man who lived in the lake house in 2004, who as you suspected should have been the guy who died in 2006. Here is where it gets tricky. She tells him about the fact that she will be in that park on Valentine's Day in 2006. That in and of itself would have caused his death. However, on Valentines Day 2008, she learns that he was that guy in 2006 and sends him a last minute not to stay ay until 2008. He does. That is why he misses his dinner date in 2006. That is why her notes keep reaching him in 2004. That is why the dog is with her from 2005 on. If you ever watched the Movie Three Wishes, the dog in that movie was a genie/alien or something like that and it could grant wishes. Let us assume that she wished she could have saved him that day and suddenly she could. They fell in love in 2004 at her birthday party and their love had to wait until 2008 to come into being. That was what the whole Jane Austin novel was about, the book she had him find. They are to prove that love can stand the test of time.

I enjoyed it and I figured it out early on. The guy that dies by the bus is Alex. They are corresponding two years apart from each other. In one of her letters she tells him about her new job and where she works. He remembers this and waits two years and tries to find her. He sees her across the street and does not see the bus.
When she is at the brothers office and finds out what day Alex dies that is when she realizes that the guy that died by the bus was alex. that is why she sends a letter telling him NOT to try to meet her at the hospital that day.

I guess you have to watch as much Sci Fi and time travel as I do to not get a head ache about this stuff. This story is very much like a Hall Mark Movie called the letter about an old desk that is the instrument of getting the mail back and forth to two people that are 100 years apart.

It was Alex but he changes the course of time by waiting the two years instead of crossing the street when he saw her on valentines day in 2006. The mailbox was magical and when she put the letter in when she moved the letter went back in time 2 years personally I thought the movie was silly

He was two years behind, in 2004. She was two years ahead, in 2006. They were connected by a time rift via the 'magic mailbox', both moving forward in time relatively speaking, and consistantly separated by two years.

He knew she would be at that square on Valentine's Day of 2006 so he went there to see her and was killed by the bus as he crossed the street without looking. He died in her arms so he was unable to keep their date at the restaurant later. On Valentine's day 2008 she realized he was the one who died exactly two years earlier so she fired off a quick letter to him through the magic mailbox telling him to not go to see her on Valentine's day 2006, but to be patient and come to her at the Lake House on Valentine's Day 2008. He did, they swapped spit, and the credits rolled.

The rest of the confusion is, as they say in Hollywood, the Magic of Filmmaking.

The movie involves them living in different time dimensions. So the guy that died in her arms was Alex. The difference of time was fates way of getting them together and making it right, because they were meant to be together. Somehow, they would manage to be in the same spot again, but instead, he would live because they understand that it was their path to be together.

Chronological order of events

* Alex finds the first note, telling him about the footsteps on the bridge.
* Alex paints the bridge. Jack appears and creates paint footprints. Alex and Kate correspond.
* Jack runs away. Alex abandons the lake house and gives the key to Morgan, so Kate can move in.

2006

* Kate leaves the lake house and moves to Chicago, taking Jack with her, but she leaves the first note mentioning footprints and a box in the attic.
* On Valentine's Day, Kate witnesses a man dying in a traffic accident at Daley Plaza. Though she is a doctor and on the scene within seconds, the man dies "in (her) arms," she later tells her lead doctor.
* While visiting the lake house on a weekend, she finds a response letter.
* Alex and Kate correspond.
* Kate waits at the Il Mare, but Alex does not appear.
* Kate tells Alex not to write to her anymore.

2007

2008

* On Valentines Day, Kate and Morgan visit a newly formed architecture firm which includes Alex's brother, Henry. When Kate notices a sketch of the lake house, she asks Henry who made the sketch. He tells Kate that Alex did; she asks to speak to him, and Henry pauses and says sadly that Alex died two years ago on Valentine's Day. Kate asks where it happened
* Kate rushes to the Lake House and its mailbox. She leaves a desperate message in the mailbox, telling Alex not to come to meet her at the Plaza, not cross the street and just wait. She waits at the lake house.
* Weeping, Kate almost fails to notice the telltale turning-down of the mailbox flag. She stands, turns around, Alex appears in his pickup truck. As she says, "You waited," the movie ends.

The "Lake House" is a remake of the Korean film, "Siworae" (2000) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282599/
