I was in the business near 10 years. Never had to wear a hairnet. The closest was at an upscale country club where everyone was given a ballcap to wear, regardless of hair length. I had super short hair at the time, and the other gals wore their long hair in ponytails outside of their caps.
I guess it all differs, depending on what the restaurant policies were.

The point of a hairnet is to make sure no hair gets into anybody's food. Think about it like this. Would you want someone's hair in YOUR food? yuck!! So please do us all a favor and wear your hairnet. Thanks!

Yes, please. I know I don't like finding other people's hair in my food at a restaurant. That's why food service workers wear hairnets -- to keep hair out of food.

My brother is an Environmental Health Officer (person with the power to close a kitchen if it or its staff are not up to standard).
He says that its not the law, you don't HAVE to do it but it makes the public more relaxed if they see you wearing one. Its usually up to your employer.
Also, I used to work in a school kitchen and I didn't wear one and I have long hair! Nobody seemed to mind.
Hope that helps
