You can go to a good lawn & garden center and get fruit tree spikes that you put in the ground around the dripline of the tree. They're easy to use and last 6 weeks.

If you want organic fert get Espoma Garden*Tone or Flower*Tone.

I know this will sound funny, but we have a birdfeeder on our front lawn, and we noticed that the spot of grass underneath it is greener than the rest of the lawn since it gets fertilized by bird droppings. We move it around every month or so now so the spot isn't quite so noticeable. You might try hanging a bunch of birdfeeders from the tree, or if the tree is too small yet, then put some stakes in the ground around it and hang the birdfeeders from that. Then all you have to do is keep the feeders stocked with bird feed. How's that for an unconventional way to fertilize?

In April put a mulch of compost or rotted manure around the base of the trunk . But keep away from the bark. This mulch should be spread as far as the branches reach. It is best to keep the area around the tree free of weeds and other plantings.

Varies with what the soil in your area needs. Best to go to your local nursery or farm store and take their recommendation.
Ignore the previous recomendation of salt ( that will kill the tree). If using kitchen peelings, scrapes, lawn clippings etc. compost them first. Don't use grass clippings that have been treated with weed killer.
