RAC - Reservation against Cancellation.
It is for long distance and night journeys. You can board the train with this ticket and you are charged for sleeper charges etc. The sleeper berths will be given only if there is cancellation. Even otherwise, (In case of no cancellation of berths) you will have a seat. In one lower birth 3 persons can sit and you will be accommodated with such seats.

Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) is a term related to railway tickets in India.
The legend RC appearing on the tickets and Reservation Chart indicates the RAC Status. This means that you are provided reserved sitting accommodation initially. This facility is available in all Classes other than First Class AC. You will be allotted a berth, according to priority, in the event of any berths falling vacant due to cancellations or confirmed passengers not turning up. You will be entitled to refund of reservation charges in the event of non-allotment of berth.

When you book, few berths are reserved for RAC quota. In this, the seat is confirmed, but the berth will be allotted once it is avaialble. As and when a person cancles a reservation, same will be allotted to the person with highest seniority in RAC quota. Sratrting from RAC1 etc. With RAC ticket, you can board the reserved compartment. But with waitlisted ticket, you can travel in reserved coach.

In reservation against cancellation, you are allowed to travel in the reserved compartment by sitting. If any confirmed ticket is cancelled, the same in alloted to the RAC ticket holders by turn.

RAC means that you will get a berth (for sleeping ) if Reservations done by fellow passanger is cancelled if not you will have to share the Berth sitting with another XYZ fellow passanger.

That means you will get a confirmation or reservation as soon as someone cancelles their seat

Very simple: If the there is no seat- but if i cancell my booking only then you have chance to get reservation. that only in the case where no seat is available.
