The way that the melanocytes in the skin are expressed in the hair. The melanocytes dictate skin and hair color. We all have the same number of melanocytes, but they express themselves to different degrees according to our genetics.

I'd say definitely the color, for one.
Brunette's roots don't go as deep as Blondes. The blonde color sucks all the intelligence out of a person. Sometimes hair dye can help this. However, dye can't cure just plain ignorance.
