Intel Core Duo is the best choice, a little more expensive, but is the best performer. If your just using word, excel, internet, then save the cash and get a AMD. The Core Duo essintially has two processors inside, where as the others have one. It has been shown that you can make a PC faster by two ways, increasing the processor speed, or increasing the number of processors. Increasing the number of processors is the best option as it does not generate excessive heat like a fast single core. Stay tuned for quad core processors, early next year. This will reduce the cost of core duo.

the main difference is the price and what you want to use the processor for. Celeron is the worst choice bar none dirt cheap and not designed for anything serious. The others are better choices and I am partial to AMD because they are good processors with little failure and far chearper than Intel. For more details consult the two sites below.

Intel Core Duo: fast, pretty good on battery, more expensive
Intel Celeron: Cheap, good on battery, not good for fast processing (slow front side bus)
Sempron: faster than Celeron, cheap, pretty good for processing
Athlon processors: Fast front side bus, cheaper, can be fast
